Cyclically, we are on the verge of a boom.  Gold bulls think so, and so do those looking at base metals and many other commodities.  Also, check this chart.

To my mind, the boom will be unusual in that it will be accompanied by deflation, as things will be coming at us "Faster, cheaper, better," as they used to say in Silicon Valley.  None of this, of course, addresses the issue of timing, though deflation is seen in interest rates.
