Archaic: A volume that is approximately equal to six seams.
A seam is two bags that are attached together and throw over the back of a mule, where each bag lies on opposite sides of the mule. Each bag (i.e., one half of a seam) could hold four bushels of grain. Traditionally, six seams was enough to fill a butt. A butt is a cart that is drawn by a mule. Thus, six seams was considered to be a buttload.
