Putnam did say that the cell phone manufacturers worked on small margins and I agree that those margins and the sums of money made from those margins total billions of dollars but I think the point he was making was that they would defend their positions most vigorously with their deep pockets and that the path of least resistance was elsewhere. However, it wouldn't be the first time he's made the context of a statement beguile the listener.
