Apparently you forgot Apple made some hoopla (HYPE) about their new "surprise" product that was under "wraps" and later surfaced on Apple websites as being an MP3 player. At that time EDIG was well into the game as an MP3 designer.
Yes, there was speculation as to whose tech Apple was going to use. They chose portalplayer, a realtively new company, one which EDIG had some interaction with on the design front. Portalplayer went BIG after that...the speculation as to the market impact was accurate, the selection of EDIG was not to be....but it was not an unreasonable form of speculation at the time.
Also, note, MP3 players are portable devices. I did note EDIG did not single out MP3 players as a category, as they did with cell phones etc.
As for cell phones, the only public information on that front is that EDIG continues to place cell phones as the lead product in their infringement update PRs....and it's not alphabetical order.
With the assistance of IP veteran, Pat Nunally, management and outside law firms have been conducting patent due diligence while evaluating the licensing potential to companies in the cell phone, PDA/Pocket PC, portable A/V recorder, digital camera, camcorder, and other portable device industries."
