I'm not going to bother shorting gold. I'm smart enought to know I'm no good at timing the market. Like Skeleg, I have a full time job and may not be able to react in time to a market call.
But I have heard the motto "Only short stocks you wouldn't mind owning if you're wrong." In this case, you end up owning gold right when you want to be if you're wrong.
