Hey Foghorn,
You're right they are very distinct. I actually heard a lot of references to those First Nations lands on other boards. Pure hypocrities. These people have agenda's and nothing else. Unbelievable to me how people can sit there and make up their own facts and spread lies...it's total fear mongering. I love that line about how what is Quebec's is theirs, and what is Canada's is also theirs...that was gold man. It seems to be more and more the truth though. I honestly think that the Federal gov't should intervene to say that they have to develop this resource and here is my reasoning. Alberta is dealing with Oilsands and BC developing shale, Sask is even got the Balken rolling...there are tons of people in those provinces too that oppose those activities, especially in Alberta...but those projects are going forward and supplying the rest of the country with cash. Is it fair to them to exploit these resources and dish it out to these provinces. Let me touch on that more...I understand giving to the provinces that don't have resources and revenue...we're all Canadians and it makes sense to help them out...BUT when a province is sitting on a resource, it only makes sense that they should have to take the incentive to develop it to help the country as a whole. They really don't want to be a part of Canada (not all the people ofcourse), yet have no problem living off of them...way to stick to their principles.
As I mentioned today, the gov't officially said no to a moratorium. Bencro said it best, these other parties are against this exploitation to gain political ground. They forced to gov't in saying no, which will anger some people to help them gain votes. Also, he mentioned how other parties want to be the one to be credited with exploiting the resource.
My parents are in Alberta, and frankly the oilsands weren't a big thing with the population at first, but now that there house prices all in Alberta are up 3X to record highs and it's creating huge wealth, people are praising it.
If you were to bring these things up one on one with an environmentalists in a debate, they'd have nothing to come back with. There one and only hold is on fracking, and that's old news and been disproved already by every jurisdiction and health organization in fracking states. I even heard them talking about how it will create noise and dust...my god talk about having no other arguments. To bring that up is pure comedy.
I'd love to be able to cut off any types of payments to Quebec and see them really fend for themselves as some of them want and then we'll see where they end up in a few years. Already up to their necks in debt and they'd like to keep sinking further. One environmentalist said that because some of the water stays underground, it's less water for the human race to use. WOW. With the water available to use, frack all the wells possible in North America and you wouldn't make a noticible mark on the worlds water. People in Quebec would use more to wash their cars in a year then fracking would.
I would just like to hear an argument that hasn't already been studied and disproved by others in the industry...the thing is, they have none. It's basically like me trying to re-invent the wheel, when it's already been put in place. Just because those people don't care to listen and learn, doesn't mean that you put a stop on this. It's ignorance on their part. Oilsand were pretty much new to Albertans and I could understand, but this has been taking place for over a decade now...people need to start opening their ears and start listening.
