This is interesting but it's hard to even guess what the software side will look like when universal memory (of one type or another - POET we hope:) is on the shelf.

Right now a good deal of effort is spent trying to write software to keep memory safe and distributed to minimize the risk of catastrophic data loss. And according to the previously posted article from HP, there is another set of software that helps hide the latency of various storage types (cache and prefetch, for example)

Imagine what it will be like to have a whole 3D array of POET universal memory connected optically to the processor. There wil be no need for a RAID setup to protect data because it will be duplicated on several "layers" of memory instantly. If there is an error in one layer the data will be recovered and recopied from another layer. Hell, you could even have something like the kind of redundancy in RAID, but over an optically connected network connection to protect against physical destruction (fire, for example).

There are already things like this (cloud storage) but it is ridiculously slow for casual users like us.
