Dash, think about it. All the patents in the world and all the companies whose worth is totally dependant upon those patents. And what happens when the patent holder dies, does the patent pass to his/her heirs? It surely stays with the company. The company has to control the patent and "own" it in every sense of the word other than the inventor has his/her name on it.
