Peru's main stock indexes end higher as mining shares gained ground

  • Lima, Aug. 26 (ANDINA). Peru's main stock market indexes ended higher Friday, as various mining companies gained ground following an announcement Thursday about an agreement with the government on a new tax.


    The broad General Index ended 1.65% stronger at 19,795.94. The blue-chip Selective Index closed 1.72% higher at 27,492.87.

    Copper producer Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde gained 1.58% to end at $38.60. Base metals mining company Southern Copper Corp. rose 1.91% to close at $32.00.

    Silver and lead mining company Volcan Compania Minera climbed 3.17% to end at 2.93 soles ($1.07).

    Prime Minister Salomon Lerner Ghitis announced Thursday an agreement with mining companies to implement a new tax that could raise about 3.0 billion soles ($1.1 billion) a year.
