In my line of work, NEMA (National Electrical Manufactures Assocoation) members report sales/qty data, it is collected and reported on, and this is how market share is determined. I don't know what the name of the CE group is, but they obviously have a reporting channel, thus we see the market share data for the cell phone guys as an example and I'm sure all CE products are done same.

This is public info once reported which DM accessed based on what you heard that day, or the companies had to provide it for the hearing. Regardless, the info is out there.
