Cell phone vendors shipped 1.019 billion phones in 2006, 22.5 percent more than the 832.8 million they sold in 2005, according to the research firm IDC.
LG Electronics brought up the rear in the rankings of the top five vendors, but nevertheless saw record shipments in the fourth quarter, thanks to heavy promotions of music phones like the LG Chocolate.
But IDC noted that LG’s profits did not keep up with its volume because of price cuts on some of LG’s best-selling models. LG took a massive hit on profits last year, 72.9 percent lower than in 2005.
