I care because I want to know if the cost basis is set by firm ( in my case fidelity) and I want to know how the cost basis is set. If we all show the same cost basis then my question is answered.

why the reluctance to answer the question?

I just want to compare what numbers people are seeing. (Why is that a problem for you?)
