Yes, that might be right, and that idea would account for those odd would-be trades which we see "streaking by" early in the day on our screens, in which case there's really nothing nefarious happening there at all. I guess many of us, such as myself, are all-too-ready to suspect something as not being quite "according to Hoyle" when it comes to modern ways & devices.
In fact, now that i think of it a little more, it occurs to me that what we're seeing on the screen might just be due to some of our fellow traders using the order screen software as a tool to let the bank's system do the math for them, displaying what the proift/loss outcome would be after commission charges if they got a certain hypothetical trade filled in their account but doing it, as you mentioned, without any risk of a real trade going through (at that time).
