Spironolactone is most certainly an effective treatment in cardiovascular disease (Severe CHF in particular). We prescribe it and eplerenone all the time.
Look up the seminal RALES trial.
There is plenty of discussion out there on statins and androgens but it is inconclusive. That being said, statins act in a pleiotropic fashion and limiting your understanding to HMG CoA reductase is likely limiting your understanding of results they produce clinically.
