Many of the recently granted patents had a much shorter span of time between submission and grant. This one took more than two years to be granted...

Is it fair to conclude that the PTO takes longer when the Patent in question is broader in scope?

My gut feeling is yes. I also have a gut feeling that these are the sorts of patents that put the most impenetrable wall around POET's IP.
