(that's like saying the Big Mac in your hand tastes as good as the one in the TV advert looks like it should)

his department throws around bits of grant money (it looks like it's less than a hundred grand apiece) to profs so their post-docs don't starve to death (as much).

that's why it's called "Space Technology Research Grants Program"

perhaps a bit like SBIR, but for students instead of companies.

I haven't determined how the 5 selectees are connected politically, but at least some degree of pork-barrel being at play here wouldn't be a surprise.

they're aiming to test a fiber-optic receiver on ISS in 5-10 years.

so, imo, not a great threat to POET.
