I knew as soon as I wrote this story that some POET shill would show up here. You guys are nothing if not persistent.

Gallium-Arsenide has proven itself in certain military and defense applications where it provides superior protection against radiation. It has its uses. It may be used in the future for more general applications, though InGaAs is, I think, a preferred solution over straight GaAs.

Nonetheless, POET's current technology is not suited to any kind of HPC or industrial application. This milestone makes that clear:

While an important step, that's still a very early step towards any kind of commercialization. Then again, IBM's work on silicon photonics is *also* at a very early stage as far as integrating on-package solutions.

No one has solved this problem yet -- but that makes it entirely too early to go calling who has the superior solution. The press release from POET itself makes it clear that the company's current solutions that it hopes will be adopted by the mass market aren't ready for deployment yet.
