GF/ IBM Deal

"All this production is part of Globalfoundries’ program to build a worldwide manufacturing base large enough to justify its owners’ gargantuan investment. Included in this armada of assets are AMD’s former factory in Dresden, Germany, the mostly-Singapore-based fabs acquired when Globalfoundries bought Chartered Semiconductor, and the soon-to-be-brought-on-board plants in Essex Junction, Vermont, and East Fishkill, New York, now owned by IBM.

Part of Tom Caulfield’s (GF) mandate is to fill and optimize these fabs. He believes that the demand for microprocessor chips of all types is there, what with the increase in data traffic driven by the Internet of Things (IoT), high-mobility devices like smartphones and tablets, and the build-out of computing infrastructure to accommodate all this traffic. And the group of manufacturers that can afford to build plants to supply microprocessors is only shrinking."

GF - Samsung / Apple

"Samsung will use GlobalFoundries for what is known as “flex capacity.” This is a long-standing industry practice under which a chip manufacturer pays to occasionally use another company’s factories when demand on their own factory is running higher than they would like, and they need a little help.

Two years ago, Samsung and GlobalFoundries also “synced” four of their fabs, including Samsung’s S2 fab and GlobalFoundries’ Fab 8 in Malta, to include the latest chips for mobile devices. By syncing their fabs, the company can go to a customer and tell them that their chips will be made the same way by either company.

Samsung and Global Foundries have been working towards being able to do this for some time now. It gives them the ability to manage the process of meeting demand with greater flexibility which is why they’ve been doing it."

New marketing efforts: Per our discussions with Company representatives, the Company has

been much more aggressive in marketing POET to market and PTI has already made inroads of

varying degrees with several large technology companies based on marketing efforts in San Jose,
