My guess is, 90% of all readers are laymen and probably more, which is fine. But there are some who are in the game for more than 3 years. I'd assume they should at least be able to differentiate between wavelenght of laser light and structure width of an IC.
When SPIE talks about 850, 980 or 1200nm they mean wavelengths of the emitted light of the used lasers. If we talk about 100 or 40nm we talk about structures. A real life analogy: How many cars can go side by side on a highway (structure) and what color do their headlights have (wavelength).
No rocket science for someone following this board for years.
