This is some mega speculation here . . .

There's been a mysterious top-secret Apple project in the works for a short while code named "Project Azalea" that is believed to involve building a a new chip fab. There's literally hundreds of articles about it (if anyone is bored enough to read a few, just google it) and nobody seems to truly know what it's about. Here's a sample article from last December:
