Canadian governments often use the conference to unveil major announcements pertaining to the mining sector. But they don’t always live up to expectations.
That was the case Sunday, when federal natural resources minister Greg Rickford and Ontario mining minister Michael Gravelle convened a big press conference with the leaders from the Matawa First Nations. It clearly had to do with development of the “Ring of Fire” in Northern Ontario. Could it be that Ottawa was ready to commit $1-billion to the Ring of Fire after months of intense lobbying from the province?
Not quite. The big news turned out to be that the two governments will spend a whopping $785,000 to study an east-west road to the remote region.
