Would this be a good time for the province to announce the final road details with the Matawa?

"It won't be too long after ringing in the New Year that the Ring of Fire will begin to feel a bit closer to reality."

"We're talking about shovels in the ground in 2018," said Glenn Thibeault this week, in reference to a pair of roads the Wynne government is committed to building to the mineral-rich region.

Kind of a part 2 of the road funding announcement in 2015?

Canadian governments often use the conference to unveil major announcements pertaining to the mining sector. But they don’t always live up to expectations.

That was the case Sunday, when federal natural resources minister Greg Rickford and Ontario mining minister Michael Gravelle convened a big press conference with the leaders from the Matawa First Nations. It clearly had to do with development of the “Ring of Fire” in Northern Ontario. Could it be that Ottawa was ready to commit $1-billion to the Ring of Fire after months of intense lobbying from the province?

Not quite. The big news turned out to be that the two governments will spend a whopping $785,000 to study an east-west road to the remote region.

Finges crossed they get it right this year at PDAC
