The Ring of Fire is a mineral-rich region in Northern Ontario about 500 kilometres north-east of Thunder Bay.

Ontario's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change approved the terms of reference on Friday for the environmental assessment of the Noront Resources nickel project in the Ring of Fire.

The company first submitted its plan more than two years ago.

The terms of reference sets out the rules for consulting First Nations about the impacts of the proposed mine.

Earlier this year First Nations in the area complained they didn't have enough time to provide input into the process.

Noront plans to open its nickel mine in 2018. The company says it will have a life span of up to 20 years.
