I have long thought there would be two roads, and possibly a railroad, so agree with your thoughts. There may however be a couple of stumbling blocks which will delay the the construction of two of those transportation routes. Of course any delay in the access corridors will delay mine start up.
I see the E/W route proceeding ahead of a N/S route for the very reasons you lay out.
The stumbling blocks could be:
- Chief Moonias said on CBC Radio this morning that he will never allow Cliffs to build a bridge over the Attawapiskat River. I suspect that is simply his way of trying to get all he can?
- Plus the Ontario government still has to decide on what to do about the Far North Act that they passed in the Legislature. As you will recall the FNA stipulated that 50% of the north would be protected. It might be hard for them to map out that 50% if they build two roads plus a railroad, and perhaps eventually as many as 6 different mines in the ROF. I am confident that all will eventually come to pass it just may take longer then some are prepared to wait.
- The environmental groups like the Wildlands League and CPAWS will do all they can to ensure, that at best, only a small amount of disturbance will occur.
