Ontario, First Nations sign for Ring of Fire cooperation
By tbnewswatch.com
Two Far North First Nations communities took what is being called an important step toward cooperation with the province when it comes to Ring of Fire development.
Marten Falls First Nation Chief Eli Moonias and Webequie First Nation Chief Cornelius Wabasse signed a letter of intent with the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry Minister Michael Gravelle and Ministry of Natural Resources Minister Linda Jeffrey Thursday.
Provincial officials call the move a first formal step toward a memorandum of cooperation for mineral development issues, which includes land use planning in the communities’ traditional areas.
"The fact that we remain engaged with our First Nation partners to address issues around mineral exploration and development on their traditional land use areas speaks to the commitment of all parties to achieving a consensus," Minister Gravelle is quoted as saying in a provincial news release issued Thursday.
"I commend Chief Moonias and Chief Wabasse for taking an important leadership role in securing a more prosperous future for their people."
The letter of intent acknowledges a need to develop a working relationship between the First Nations and the province for potential impacts of the proposed Ring of Fire developments.
Provincial officials add that more than 30 companies exploring the Ring of Fire areas estimate there could be a potential for decades of chromite production.
