Man, does this discussion ever open up possibilities.
Herb suggests that a vanadium battery bank, to be meaningful in a city environment, would have to be the size of a footbal stadium. So what! If there is no heat problem, emmision problems, or length of service problems. why not build future football stadiums 3 storeys above ground. A stadium traditionally has no additional structures above it, and the whole field is manmade, so why not have the local power source serve as the foundation for a sports facility.
But I especially like Rob's suggestion of a building being erected out of prefab panels where the surface is the gathering system while the supporting structure is the storage unit. Wouldn't vanadium have similar strength factors as steel? Think of it.
I spent most of my adult life involved in electronics in some form or other. In the mid 60's there was similar discussions on the possibilities of a silicon diode replacing the well known germanium diode and most of us thought of it as science fiction, or that a transistor could ever replace a vacuum tube, not likely???
