I believe I responded to this question recent (and was met by agreement by others). The question:

IMO, the Judge can do whatever he wants in this regard (e.g., push out that "final" date), especially if he sees the proposed motion as a probable benefit to the court (i.e., prompts settlement or "narrows" the trial to one only involving damages determination).
