In essence this is another way to slice a cake. Instead of cutting it down (read drilling) the slice (drilling) would be horizontal and directional (= you can steer it to where you want the diamond cutter to go). It would be effective if you can have some kind of "guidance" on the "correct" direction for the cutter (just like have a pig along to sniff out the truffles). The guidance could be magnetic, conductivity, high/low/, or whatever indicators you may have for the targets. This kind of direction/horizontal drilling would give better better coverage and chance for possible intersections of shallow deposits.

At least, that's the way I understand it. Any drilling experts out there want to chime in?
