KWG Longs,
Recall on June 22, Ring of Fire area First Nation communities issues eviction notices to 22 Ring of Fire mining companies. There was plenty of coverage on this in case you missed it…a quick Google search will take you to the press release covered by CBC and others. I think there are a few links provided on this forum if you look through the Full Discussion thread.
In my opinion, the eviction notices were likely issued in an additional effort by the FNs to secure a seat at the ROF development table. According to the press release, FNs want participation in the mining projects and want to be actively participating with government in meaningful negotiations. I think the issuing of eviction notices demonstrates complementary practices along with the legal challenges that FNs have brought against the interest parties (easement party application, etc).
However, mentioned on the list are the usuals…Cliffs and Noront. I was in touch with KWG management on the weekend and I can confirm that KWG also received an eviction notice. In my opinion only, I suspect that KWG was issued an eviction notice due largely in part to their association/JV with Cliffs in the Big Daddy. However, I can confirm that Debut Diamonds and Canada Chrome DID NOT receive eviction notices from the FNs. I find this fascinating – if FNs want all these ‘intruders’ off their land, why were DD and CCC allowed to stay?
In my opinion, I think this speaks volumes as to the positive and meaningful relations that DD and CCC has established with the FNs. Open and meaningful dialogue, consultation and respect for the FNs has been the way of doing business for the management of KWG, DD and Canada Chrome.
First, hats off to the management at KWG, DD and CCC on a job well done and for having the foresight and intelligence to see that bringing this mine and railway to life includes meaningful, open and honest communication with the FNs.
Second, to all KWG longs…a 30% interest in a world class chromite deposit is (as we know) very good as is the staking of the most feasible route in and out of the Ring – but these taken together with positive and progressive relations with the local FNs as an interested party positions KWG extremely well as the forerunner in the Ring. All in my opinion of course.
All the best to KWG longs,
