The comments on the short position from Coach are correct and I have discussed this with numerous people on Baystreet, they must cover at the conversion date. I don't know how the shorts can get around this and it may just be that ECU is part of a much larger list of shorted juniors and the entity shorting simply is not yet aware of the merger for an individual stock like ECU, this is possible.
