While there was no discussion about the potential to tap into a possible 485 trillion cubic metres of shale gas in the Karoo, if indeed that reservoir is found there, you can imagine how Japanese companies will be sniffing around for opportunities there.
As Abe pointed out at the end of the conference, Japan was looking for a “win-win” for all in the potential for business for Japan in Africa, but he may as well have been speaking about shale gas.
