Excellon Containing Water Inflow
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 4, 2008) - Excellon Resources Inc. (TSX:EXN) continues to manage the unexpected underground water inflow at its Platosa operation in Durango State, Mexico. Crews are currently drilling and cementing off the inflow area as well as placing a second safety plug in the access drift below it. The Company will start to pump out the water after it has tested these cemented structures, and is installing additional pumping capacity to accelerate the dewatering process. The Company has engaged a Canadian Consulting Professional Engineer, with expertise in grouting operations, to provide on site assistance. Excellon will continue to provide updates as they become available.
The unexpected intersection of a water-bearing formation at the 140 metre elevation occurred during the routine development of a third ventilation raise in Platosa Test-mine's north-western section. This resulted in a water inflow that exceeded the pumping capacity of the mine dewatering pumps and a suspension of mining activity.
Excellon has maintained normal deliveries of ore from stockpile inventory since the suspension of mining activity, and will make a further shipment on June 5 from the remaining on site inventory. It will then have to suspend shipments until normal operations resume and the company is able to restart production.
"I am confident that Excellon's operations team and consultant have the expertise necessary to handle this situation," said Peter A. Crossgrove, Excellon's chairman. "They are focused on sealing off the water inflow and resuming normal operations."
