Hydrogen fuel cell cars use small high voltage batteries to recover energy from regenerative braking. This energy is primarily reused during acceleration. This is just like a hybrid car. The same high-voltage batteries are also used operate the various components of the car that need to stay powered if the fuel cell is not operating. This includes electrically powered power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning; all of which replace belt driven components in an internal combustion car.
Except for the power source, fuel cell cars ARE electric cars. And they ARE hydrogen-electric hybrids.
Look, I am a multi decade follower and shareholder in Electrovaya, as such I still believe we have great IP but it needs to be open sourced for profit.
Now Grasshopper, "listen on the wind and hear this message"...Automotive fuel cells have been evolving rapidly and there are many myths based on outdated designs. One of which is that they need batteries for acceleration. Another is that they are too heavy. And another is that they are short lived. And another is that they are inherently too expensive. None of these tired stories are really true anymore.
The sole limitation to the growth of fuel cell vehicles is the availability of hydrogen at the pump. Walmart teaming with PLUG as major supplier is not only a shot across the bough of the Forklift serving OEM's but the entire EV sector as they already have filling stations nationwide.
