Message: Case for an "L" Shaped Recession
We need to keep things in perspective. If you only double your investment after holding for a year, that is a terrific return. Trying to get the extra 10, 20 30% thereafter isn't worth the risk and angst in my opinion. There are way to many stocks out there that you can make that on just by trading the cycles (ie, like buying tech in August, etc). I actually hope we do get rid of the favorable long term capital gains tax (15%) as I view it as an investment distraction that tends to cause some to hold too long (resulting in a net loss when the stock drops). I rarely hold a stock for a year, so I don't care. I'm in favor of a relatively lit corporate tax struture to attract business, but I am also in favor of a slightly higher level of wealth redistribution from the highly rich (not me) to those relatively poor (not me). I don't buy the extremely rich 'earned' what they got, that's BS. They just learned to game the system based on there personal intangibles. That said, let's not go crazy. The chance to get to be really rich is a good entreprenueral driver. Since we are off topic, I am highly in favor of Obama as the next President (pretty certain that will be the case) and can't stand the Clintons. I want to make a buck as much as the next guy, but, in my opinion, this country has been HORRENDOUSLY run the last 7 years. Where do we start ... Bin Laden still out there, an unnecessary war, who needs the Consitution, everyone hates us, no discernable energy policy, a financial system in ruins from, in my opinion, a lack a 'appropriate oversite', etc. etc. etc. You never know how someone is going to be when they actually get into the oval office, but I generally feel comfortable with what I think he will bring. At least he can speak english. -- JMO
