When I short something, my broker deposits the proceeds into my account and it gets swept to the MMF. I generally don't use the money for anything but covering. Besides the cash from the short, I have enough other stocks and bonds for any collateral needed for the margin requirement, which varies somewhat by broker over the federal minimum requirement.
