desi, i'm no miner but from what i've seen/read an open pit is the only way to extract the gold from LC....also, changing the design would entail new environmental impact/feasibility studies/etc (basically you'd start from scratch)...so i'd assume this was not up for discussion....

in CJR terms- "the gold is like little flakes sprinkled all through the sand and rock from the surface down to (180'?), you have to shovel it, then have the naked miners sift through it til you get all the gold out"....
