There are hundreds of reasons why Elmer would leave Vancouver and head back to Calgary.

Yes, I agree there are hundreds of reasons a person can head back. But if you are involved in finishing the most important document of a company that will affect hundreds/thousands of investors including yourself and your family those reasons have to be pretty damn good like sickness, death in the family or other emergency.

Knowing Elmer, after speaking with him several times, I can say that he is the kind of person that will stay up till wee hours in the morning on weekends to get a job done so that is why I speculate that the only reason he left for Calgary is he is done with the BFS and there is nothing left for him to do in Vancouver where the Merit offices are located. Anyways, this is my speculation and we will know soon enough.
