Ecuador Cuts off Seats at Transition Assembly
Quito, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) The Ecuadorian transitional legislative authority will have at least 70 members who will pass close to nine bills during the next six-months, the Constituent Assembly President Fernando Cordero confirmed.
The proposal presented by the Assembly board aims at reducing the amount of members to less than half the current number, said Cordero.
Remaining members will be appointed on the basis of the September 2007 Assembly votes and only 70 of the 130 seats will be taken.
According to the Constitution, the Assembly must have at least 10 sub-commissions to draw and examine the laws which will boost the implementation of the new Constitution. Once the Assembly members are appointed, the election of temporary members of the new National Electoral Council (current Supreme Electoral Court) and of the National Court of Justice (Supreme Court of Justice until now) will become the government's first priorities.
These authorities have to be set up during the first 4 months the new Constitution is in force, as prescribed in the Transition Regimen.
The Constituent will session after the new Constitution is published in the Official Register on October 15.
