I live in Chicago. The asian carp is indeed found in the Mississippi watershed and several of the tributaries leading into the southern end of Lake Michigan. In order to prevent a carp invasion of the Great Lakes - at least in my area, electronic barriers have been placed in a couple of those waterways to prevent migration into the great lakes. Also, it was recently announced that fish killing chemicals will be placed into the most affected areas of a few of those waterways this winter as additional insurance. The only downside is that these chemicals will kill 100% of all species. Once applied these chemicals are supposed to breakdown & disipate quickly. I hope it works!
Also, I fish some of these waters including Lake Michigan along it's shoreline; these carp can actually jump into your boat after breaking surface. I believe there is a story that circulated when someone was actually knocked unconsious while fishing out of a boat when one of these "flying" Asian Carp ( a very large one, and they do get large) collided with his head. 'Don't know if the story is true , perhaps just an "urban legend". But ,maybe motorcycle helmets will become a standard piece of fishing eqipment down here. LOL!
