OTTAWA - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN.TO - News) has announced new patent infringement law suits in the United States against a couple of big name manufacturers.

The suits, filed separately in Florida, accuse Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc. and Ericsson, Inc., among other parties, of violating three company patents involving LTE technologies.

LTE, which stands for long-term evolution, is the latest in wireless technology, giving cellphone and tablet users data streaming capabilities that can exceed the broadband service they have at home.

Ottawa-based Wi-LAN said in a brief release Tuesday that it is being represented in the suits in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida by Vinson & Elkins LLP.

The release did not say what remedies the company is seeking.

Founded in 1992, Wi-LAN has licensed intellectual property to more 260 companies worldwide that manufacture or sell a wide range of communication and consumer electronics products.

Overall, the company has a growing portfolio of more than 3,000 issued or pending patents, including more than 150 in the acquisition of wireless technology company Alvarion Ltd. for $19 million. That deal was announced Monday.
