To follow up on my last post, Agoracom kicked me out before I was able to finish it.

A net capital loss can only be applied to previous year's capital gains and in fact does not lower the taxes owing for the year claimed. That is why it is important to book as many capital losses as possible in the same calendar year that you have a large capital gain...
