Honestly - morbid curiosity. There is absolutely nothing that interests regulators anymore and I agree that I am exposing myself but this is just something that caught my personal interest.
While I agree that this is an interesting story, my interest lies with the shareholders that jumped all over themselves to snap up the stock. The company's story is one of poor management and a great deal of promotion, but that is hardly foreign to the history of Canadian exploration companies. The stock really benefitted from the network effects of people sharing the story with their friends, relatives, etc. which led to some really inappropriate investments. We heard stories of people putting their life savings, their retirements and the like into the stock on the hope that this would be their big payout.
What we never heard was "I consulted an investment advisor" or "I only invested amounts that I could afford to lose". These statements would have indicated to us that some sober second thoughts were put into these investments. It seemed as though personal referrals were treated as gospel, which is no way to make an investment.
Let me put it to you this way - if you are buying a used car, are you believing everything the salesman is telling you? Of course not. Any investment promoter, whether it is management, investor relations or your neighbor, must be treated in the same fashion. There is a vested interest in having you place your money with this individual and it is your responsibility to make sure that you understand the risks.
