Message: Some advice Lori.
  1. Do this before you go to court.
    1. Determine why you are being called to court. If you are a friendly witness, request that the law firm depose (question) you before trial. Ask that they make sure to ask you questions the opposition will ask, especially those questions you really don't want to answer.
    2. Fully inform the attorney calling you to testify of any problems with your testimony (i.e. you have a record, you have a financial stake in the outcome, etc.). Such questions are much easier to handle if they are addressed during direct examination.
    3. Give full and honest answers when being deposed. You can expect the attorney to ask the same questions at trial. He will need to know what to expect from your testimony.
  2. 2
Do this on the day of the trial:
    1. Dress conservatively in business attire. Suit and tie for men, business attire or a dress (not low cut) for women.
    2. Give honest answers. Your body language will shout that you are lying. Attorneys are experts at recognizing this and will crucify you! Lying under oath is a felony offense; the courts will punish you to the maximum extent if you are caught. (In England, perjury used to be a Capital Offense.)
    3. Keep your hands out of your face, especially your nose. This is a typical trait of a liar. If you have a cold or other problem, take medicine (though not one that makes you drowsy) before court or at least have tissue paper in your hands while on the stand.
    4. Assume the demeanor of a lady or gentleman. Do not use slang, profanity or terms unfamiliar to most people.
    5. Be in good spirits while you are testifying (don't go overboard). If the judge or jury likes you, they will be more likely to believe you.
