The passing of Premier Klein is truly a sad occasion for me.
In his last provincial election campaign, the company I worked for was contracted by the PC party to provide transportation for their people. The premier was often my charge. "Norm, you call me Ralph." And Mrs. Klein was Colleen. Nicer and more genuine people one could not imagine.
At some of his stumps, there were those that had something to protest. I could see that he took that in stride as well. I would hear him discussing with his companions how many of those protesters were wanting programs for their interest group and how it would not be beneficial to Albertans as a whole. This was at a time when we were flush with cash.
Just seeing Ralph speak with his colleagues, Albertans and us, I came to really understand the genuineness and charm he had. There are the Ralphisms that are widely known and there are many more great quips he made to those he freely had chats with over a beer.
Seeing how Ralph became so withdrawn these past years as a result of his illness was hard. Such a turn for a man who always was approachable and conversed with anyone on any topic. My thoughts are with Colleen and their family.
God's speed Ralph.
