  • Lima, Oct. 06 (ANDINA). The International Monetary Fund (IMF) noted on Thursday that Peru's new mining tax is favorable for the country and suggested to use the new resources in the industrialization of the nation or the promotion of production with more added value.

Nicolás Eyzaguirre, director of the IMF’s Western Hemisphere Department, said that it is appropriate what Peru intends to do in terms of extraction of mineral resources through royalties and its industrialization; and use said resources to improve the infrastructure and education in the country.

“It is appropriate to extract the proper resources to improve in a definite way the possibility that Peru moves toward to alternatives of processing raw materials with added value or industries that supply the raw material industry,” said Eyzaguirre to TV Peru.

This way, the IMF representative said that the new mining tax is favorable in the context of countries with natural resources must use them judiciously.

"We have said that countries with a lot of natural resources like Canada, Australia or New Zealand, must not only socialize a significant part of these activities, but also use them judiciously to develop new production platforms," said Eyzaguirre.
