- Lima, May 02 (ANDINA). Peruvian Prime Minister Rosario Fernandez said Monday that major political, economic and social changes in the country have set Peru on a one-way course to become a first-world nation.
"The economic progress achieved so far allows Peruvians to look forward and not back, this is a very important starting point for any subsequent fate of our country," she said at the closing ceremony of a UNESCO event in Lima.
The cabinet chief pointed out that the current government has laid down "very solid foundations" to take the country down "a path of no return."
Fernandez confidently predicted that "whoever wins next month's presidential run-off will be supportive of social programs that seek to combat poverty."
She added that strong economic growth and well targeted social programs have lifted some four million Peruvians out of poverty over the last five years, thus reducing the poverty rate to below 30 percent by the end of the government's term of office this year.
