Lima, Dec. 22 (ANDINA). Peru's Mines and Energy Ministry (MEM) is expected to approve up to 16 Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) for mining projects in January-July 2011, Vice Minister for Mining Fernando Gala announced.

The ministry will complete 50 projects and their environmental impact studies by the end of the current administration. This is a crucial step to implement large and small capacity projects.

The government has approved environmental impact studies for Toromocho (Junin), Antapaccay (Cusco) and Quellaveco (Moquegua), among others.

“MEM plans to approve environmental impact statements for Las Bambas (Apurimac) and Tia Maria (Arequipa) mines next year,” he told Radio Nacional.

The portfolio of mining projects -to be undertaken across the country- is valued at US$41 billion as of July, 2011.
