Overview

Adapted from the Executive Summary

Following the investment of about five million dollars over the past two decades, the MagneGas Technology has been developed to process liquid wastes into a clean burning fuel known as magnegas, plus heat and other usable byproducts, said processing occurring without noise, liquid, gaseous or other pollutions. The technology was originally developed to process crude oil into a fuel cleaner than gasoline at a cost smaller than that of current refineries. Subsequently, the technology resulted to be applicable also to the processing of automotive, industrial, agricultural, military and other liquid waste into a clean fuel and other usable products. Said processing is done via the novel PlasmaArcFlow™ Recyclers based on flowing the liquid waste through a submerged electric arc between carbon-base electrodes. The arc decomposes the liquid molecules into their atomic constituents, and forms a high temperature plasma of mostly ionized and polarized atoms. The patented PlasmaArcFlow process continuously removes the plasma from the electrodes and controls the recombination of the atoms into magnegas. The latter bubbles to the surface where it is collected for use or storage. PlasmaArcFlow Recyclers are generally light, thus permitting the production of the fuel whenever and wherever needed, by eliminating storage and transportation costs. When completed with a separation station, PlasmaArcFlow Recyclers constitute the most efficient, faster, less polluting and least expensive method currently available for the production of hydrogen that is contained in magnegas by at least 50% in volume as a mixture with other gases, thus permitting separation via molecular and other filtering methods that are prohibited for the currently used electrolysis or reformation processes (since the latter have to produce hydrogen by breaking down its very strong valence bond to oxygen or carbon). Since it is formed at the 10,000o F of the electric arc, magnegas contains no hydrocarbon, thus having extremely clean combustion exhaust. In fact, magnegas has been certified for automotive use without catalytic converters because its combustion exhaust is composed of: about 50% water vapor, 14%-18% breathable oxygen, 4%-7% carbon dioxide, no hydrocarbon or carbon monoxide, and the rest is given by atmospheric gases. In view of these features, the ideal current use of magnegas is that as an additive to existing fossil fuels. In fact, the addition of magnegas to natural gas, gasoline and coal permits an improvement of their exhaust proportional to the magnegas percentage. As an illustration, the currently environmentally unacceptable coal is turned by magnegas into a new fuel that can meet the strongest environmental requirements, with evident large environmental and industrial benefits. In particular, when produced in sufficient volume, magnegas is indeed cost competitive with respect to gasoline and natural gas.

U.S. Patent Numbers 6,673,322; 6,663,752; 6,540,966; and 6,183,604. International patents pending.

All patents are issued under the sole name of R. M. Santilli and irrevocably assigned under the sole ownership of Hadronic Press, Inc., a Florida Corporation.

  • 6,673,322 - Apparatus for making a novel, highly efficient, nonpollutant, oxygen rich and cost competitive combustible gas and associated method; January 6, 2004
Abstract A process for the production of a clean burning combustible gas by flowing a liquid through an electric arc. The electrodes have several configurations. The invention prevents the production of carbon dioxide in the gas thereby reducing its presence when combusted and exhausted to about half that associated with gasoline exhaust; increases the cost efficiency of the process by eliminating secondary chemical reactions; and increases the life of the electrodes. The chemical structure of the combustible gas is composed of stable magnetically bonded clusters of conventional molecules and atoms that are fully detectable via peaks in conventional mass spectrometric detectors, yet such clusters remain unidentifiable by the computer search among all known molecules, and have no infrared signature other than those of the conventional molecules constituting the clusters. The liquid which is flown through the arc also acquires the chemical structure of magnetically bonded clusters.
  • 6,663,752 - Clean burning liquid fuel produced via a self-sustaining processing of liquid feedstock; December 16, 2003.
Abstract Excerpt The invention relates to a novel self-sustaining method for the clean production of a clean burning liquid fuel called MagneFuel, which method is based, first, in the production of a combustible gas via submerged electric arcs between carbon-base electrodes from crude oil, oil-base, or water-base liquid waste and then passing the combustible gas via a high pressure pipe into a tower for the catalytic liquefaction, whereby the sum of the heat output in the production of the combustible gas and that for its catalytic liquefaction is sufficient for the process to be self-sustaining, that is, capable to produce its own electricity.
  • 6,540,966 - Apparatus and method for recycling contaminated liquids; April 1, 2003
Abstract Reactors for the total recycling of contaminated liquid waste, which produce a clean burning combustible gas, usable heat, and solid precipitates. Different embodiments include the efficient recycling of automotive antifreeze and oil waste, a new method for the production of a fuel from crude oil, for desalting seawater and for recycling biologically contaminated liquid waste, such as town sewage, into a clean burning combustible gas, nutrient rich water useful for irrigation, and solid precipitates useful for fertilizers.
  • 6,183,604 - Durable and efficient equipment for the production of a combustible and non-pollutant gas from underwater arcs and method therefor; February 6, 2001
Abstract A system for producing a clean burning combustible gas comprising an electrically conductive first electrode and an electrically conductive second electrode. A motor coupled to the first electrode is adapted to move the first electrode with respect to the second electrode to continuously move the arc away from the plasma created by the arc. A water tight container for the electrodes is provided with a quantity of water within the tank sufficient to submerge the electrodes.

New Science

The magnegas Technology is the result of a number of basic scientific advances, such as the discovery of the new chemical species of Santilli magnecules necessary for a real replacement of hydrocarbons with clean fuels. The development of the technology also requested a structural broadening of quantum mechanics, superconductivity and chemistry that explains the need of two decades of research to achieve the currently available industrial maturity. [1]

Stage of Development

Following the construction of some 20 different PlasmaArcFlow Recyclers, the Magnegas Technology has now reached industrial maturity for the large scale processing of liquid wastes into magnegas and carbonaceous precipitates.

Inventor, Ruggero Maria Santilli

Dr. Ruggero Maria Santilli

While the technology and science are excellent, one must be very careful when dealing with Rugero Santilli and certain other IBR personnel, as they are very temperamental. You might find yourself on the wrong end of a lawsuit if you sneeze in the wrong direction.

Nobel Prize nominee for Chemistry in 1985.

The magnegas™ technology originated from the vision of former President Jimmy Carter, whose Administration, under his guidance, solicited the U. S. Department of Energy to invite Prof. Ruggero Maria Santilli in the late 1970's, then at Harvard University, to apply for research grant for the development of new clean energies and fuels. The invitation was the result of the fact that Prof. Santilli was already known at that time for his research in surpassing established doctrines.

In 1979, jointly with a senior mathematicians at Harvard, Prof. Santilli became the Co-Principal Investigator of the following DOE research grants ER-78-S-02-47420.A000, AS02-78ER04742, DE-ACO2-80ER10651, DE-ACO2-80ER-10651.A001, and DE-ACO2-80ER10651.A002. [2]

US MagneFuels

On August 1, 2006, Mr. Bo Linton was announced as President of USMagneFuels, Inc., with California headquarters. This was in part to bring more insulation between the inventor, Dr. Santilli, and the public, inasmuch as Dr. Santilli is challenged in the patience department when it comes to understanding the technology and explaining it to people.

  • Snubbed by mainstream, scrappy scientist sues - Rugero Santilli, who represents himself, wants the courts to force his detractors to take his ideas seriously. He accuses other scientists of plagiarizing and distorting his writings. He says they dismiss his ideas for a new form of clean, efficient energy as fringe science. (St. Petersburg Times; May 9, 2007)
    • Magnegas Rebuttals to St. Petersburg Times Unflattering Article - President of the company says journalist phoned Magnegas customers saying, "I'm calling about the lawsuit with Dr. Santilli." When they asked, "What lawsuit," she responded "I can't say", scaring several of them, and stirring up much trouble where none existed before. Newspaper response does not deny that this happened. (Magnegas unofficial forum; May 12, 2007)
  • Hydrogen is not the answer - Claude Saint-Jarre says hydrogen would be more toxic than petroleum since it accelerates the deterioration of oxygen in air. "The solution is Magnegas, that is non-polluting and derived from human and animal wastes." (FreeEnergyNews; Feb. 6, 2003)

I have been reviewing the Plasma Arc technology companies and there are at least 3 other that are marketing their plants, but they are concentrated in the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Although none of them states it directly or as a main point, they all implicate a production of energy (in the form of gas, called syngas, or heat) bigger than the electricity input required. The range is claimed to be between 4 to 10 times more output than input, depending on the waste type to be treated. [The energy comes from the waste.]

I think that Plasma Arc technology, as Dr. Santilli has stated somewhere, is an intermediate form of fusion. However, Dr. Santilli has taken a not so good marketing approach focusing too much in the science and not in the sales (constructive criticism).

For my taste, StarTech (http://www.startech.net) is by far the most successful in their marketing approach.

Let us hope that this wonderful technology is fully embraced by the world, as it will make all kind of wastes a real treasure as an energy source.
