Perhaps it is a "small potato / Big Potato" situation - perhaps someone rushing toward The Bright Shiny Object will trip over us and say "Look what I found!"

Sometimes it is entirely approriate, after seeing what has transpired, to scrap the plan you entered the fray with and respond to what is actually happening.
