"Gold" is the Bre-X story with names changed, and a bit of fictionalization, especially the ending.  Freeport was involved, but more in uncovering the fraud than in pushing it.

I made a few dollars on Bre-X trading spikes on the downtrend.  ...never was otherwise attracted to the story.
